How to Pack Your Car the Tetris Way

One of the places where I use Tetris skills the most is in my car. There never seems to be enough room to get what I need from point A to point B. Whenever I need to store something in my car, there’s always a mishmash of forgotten stuff, especially in the backseat and trunk.
Fortunately, by changing the task from a chore into a game of Tetris, I’m able to pack things into my car. If you’re thinking about using your Tetris skills while moving items in your car, SUV, or truck, you’ll first need to analyze the size of your vehicle.
Your car is a Tetris Matrix, although you’ll primarily be focused on the trunk and backseat. What I find helpful is to segment the trunk and the backseat into two individual Tetris Matrices. That way, I can play two different games of Tetris, rather than having to go back and forth between the two areas, which can get hectic and confusing.
Next, I arrange my Tetriminos (the items I’m transporting) outside the car before I begin playing Tetris. If you have several items in your home, it’s easier to bring everything outside rather than going back into the house for each individual item. When they’re arranged next to one another, your mind will jump in and begin playing Tetris—even before you pick up your first Tetrimino!
While some Tetriminos are easy to stack up, such as boxes and flexible bags of clothing, other items can be tricky, like S and Z-Tetriminos. For example, every now and then I have to completely disassemble my bicycle in order to get it to fit into both my trunk and backseat.
Before I started thinking of things the Tetris way, I tried to fit the entire bicycle inside of the car. I quickly realized this wasn’t going to work because it was too big. In a way, it was kind of like a broken stack in Tetris, where your Tetriminos haven’t aligned the way that you wanted. You have to first clear the broken stack before you can hop back into your comfortable Tetris rhythm.
By thinking outside of the box, I was able to view the bicycle as several different Tetriminos, like the wheels, which are O-Tetriminos, and the handlebars, which are a combo of L and J-Tetriminos.
If you’re having trouble fitting a large or awkwardly shaped item into your vehicle, try thinking of the item as several smaller Tetriminos. If you can disassemble the item (having the confidence to put it back together later), go for it. This will make your game of car Tetris easier.

Remember to make use of all available space in your Tetris Matrix. Rather than using large boxes, try using several smaller boxes. If you’re going to have passengers during the drive, try to avoid having your Tetriminos spill over into their area. You want them to be comfortable, not miserable!
Finally, isolate and save any breakable items for last. You don’t want to pile a heavy stack of Tetriminos on top of a television or glass. By packing your car the Tetris way, you’ll have an easier time moving items, and taking them out when you arrive at your destination.
Plus, you won’t have to worry about forgetting or losing something, since you’ll be able to slow down and go through everything during the process of stashing your items. Have you ever put your Tetris skills to the test while moving or organizing your home?
