Making Your Own Tetris Challenges
You don't have to play Tetris the same way every time. Why not come up with your own set of Tetris challenges to enjoy with friends and family?
Throughout the long and wonderful history of Tetris, there have been all sorts of unique approaches to the gameplay. Tetris games have included tried-and-true modes we all love as well as quirky twists and one-off modes which shook things up in big ways. The variety of ways Tetris developers have given us to play the game we love has been one of the most exciting things to see throughout the years.
They never seem to run out of ideas! Sometimes when you're playing through these various modes, you might come up with an idea of your own. With the amount of inspiration on display in different Tetris games, it's only natural to feel inspired yourself. There's certainly nothing wrong with coming up with your own house rules for Tetris.
So gather up some friends and family, then play a round of Tetris with some of your own rules and see who comes out on top!
All Holds Barred

The Hold Queue in Tetris can be the ultimate lifesaver. You get one Tetrimino to hang onto when you're in dire need of something special. Sometimes you use it to get yourself out of a nasty situation, and other times you use it to pull off the back-to-back combo you’ve been waiting for. Having a Tetrimino safety net like this can be invaluable, but do you think you could manage without it?
Why not challenge your friends to a game of Tetris where the Hold Queue isn't allowed? You have to play each Tetrimino as it falls, no matter how much it messes with your master plan! Believe it or not, this can be a truly challenging way to experience Tetris. There was once a time when the Hold Queue didn't exist at all. Can you imagine that? It certainly sounds like madness to us!

Tetris always offers a vast variety of modes to check out, including single and multiplayer options. Whether you're looking to challenge yourself or take on a number of opponents, Tetris is going to give you exactly what you're looking for. Still, who says you have to play single player by yourself?
Instead, why not grab a friend and split the duties? Have you ever tried to tackle Marathon Mode alongside a friend? In Marathon Mode, you have to clear out 150 lines to win, and for every set of 10 lines cleared, the game gets faster. How about every 10 lines cleared, you pass the controller to your buddy and see what they can do? Can the two of you work together to tackle Marathon Mode?
Controller Flip
Looking for a super crazy way to enjoy a round of Tetris? Throughout the years, there have been a few Tetris games which throw items into the mix. These items are used against an opponent, and can throw some unique hazards at them. One of those challenges is reversed controls for a limited amount of time. Who says you need an item to experience reversed controls, though?
Think you're masterful enough to tackle Tetris with reversed controls? Flip the controller around in your hand and see what you can do! For example, if you’re playing Puyo Puyo Tetris on the Nintendo Switch or PS4, you can flip the controller around for a brand new challenge. While rotating Tetriminos should still be easy enough, slotting them in where you want them is going to be quite the challenge. Make sure to remember your Soft and Hard Drop controls will be different as well!
There are countless ways to add crazy tweaks to how you play Tetris. All you need to do is use your imagination. Sit down with your friends and family and come up with your own set of wacky rules, and don't forget to share them with us!
