My Family's Tetris Obsession
Some families get together and go for walks. Others like to gather for barbecues or a family movie night. For my extended family, we group around the TV for some multiplayer Tetris action!
I spend a decent amount of time with my mom's side of the family. We all live relatively close to one another, so we can pop in for a visit fairly often. Better still, we actually like spending time with each other! It doesn't matter what we're doing, as we always have a good time when we're together.
That said, almost every visit involves some time in front of the TV with a bit of Tetris. It's a tradition going strong for a number of years, and we don't plan on breaking it any time soon. For the longest time, I enjoyed playing a few rounds of Tetris with my mom. Back when I was in grade school, I used to sit down with my mom for some Tetris after homework or chores.
My mom is a big fan of video games, which in part, fueled my own interest in the world of video games. While she doesn't enjoy all video game genres, she’s never missed a round of Tetris. It’s always been the one game we could come back to and know we'd have a blast with. Things stayed this way for a long time.
Other people in mom's family would dabble with Tetris from time to time, but it was my mom and I who kept squaring off against one another. We had battles across all sorts of gaming platforms, and the war raged on for years with neither side willing to lay down their controller. Little did we know how our Tetris training sessions would soon become something the whole family would battle over!
Back in 2006, Nintendo released their Wii gaming console. It was one of the most successful gaming platforms of all-time with over 100 million units sold. It became an absolute phenomenon, so much so that some of my non-gaming family members picked one up. I couldn't believe I had uncles, aunts, and cousins who were gaming for the first time thanks to the Wii.
Of course, I knew this was my opportunity to introduce them to Tetris. There was no doubt in my mind at all. I knew my family was going to love the game.

While most of them knew of Tetris before the Wii came around, they now had a console in their home to enjoy it on. This was when they became lifelong Tetris fans. Everyone was fighting for their turn to play, with players bowing out after a loss and passing their controller to someone else. Our Tetris fun would go on for hours and hours, and the fun we have only continues to grow as the years roll on.
Most recently, our family is feverishly playing Tetris on the Nintendo Switch. We all get together once a year for a family vacation, and this time around I brought my Nintendo Switch and my copy of Puyo Puyo Tetris with me. When nighttime rolled around, the TV would get fired up and it would be a night-long marathon of Tetris.
I can honestly tell you that sometimes the nights don't end until one of the players falls asleep with the controller in their hand. It literally happened to my mom a few weeks back. Once we woke her up, she refused to give up the controller, and trounced everyone in the next round! Tetris is forever going to be a part of my family's fun together.
I actually met up with some cousins less than a week ago to play a few rounds. A couple days from now, we're hanging out with family once again, and we already know there's going to be some Tetris action. It's a great excuse for us to get together and have fun. Tetris has grown into a tradition for us, and the great memories and laughs we've gained through it are priceless.
Wherever Tetris goes in the future and whatever fun it brings, I know we'll be ready to take it on together. So why not start a Tetris practice routine today and get ready for an upcoming Tetris battle of your own? Click here to get in a few free rounds of Tetris right here on our website!
